Catholic Underground ©, a.k.a. CU, is a cultural apostolate of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal - www.franciscanfriars.com. It is a direct response to a call that began with Pope John Paul II, and is continued by Pope Benedict XVI. JPII said that because the Gospel lives in conversation with culture, we must be fearless in crossing the cultural threshold of the communication and information revolution now taking place. The first part of the evening is Eucharistic adoration, and begins with Vespers (Evening Prayer). This is the universal prayer of the Church - prayed by the Catholics throughout the world in every time zone and in every language. After Vespers, there is a time of simple praise. This provides a window for each person to personally encounter Jesus Christ. The beauty of the darkened Church illumined by candles helps us enter the mystery of our Lord's presence in the Eucharist. The holy hour ends with solemn Benediction. The second part showcases Catholic artists. Here we experience the “new evangelization”. The Underground includes music, poetry, visual art, dancers, film, drama, etc. We end our evening as we began. With the prayer of the Church. Compline (Night Prayer) is simple and beautiful. It concludes with a hymn to Our Lady, Daughter Zion. Mother of the New Jerusalem.

Mission Statement The mission of The Shepherd’s Café is to promote Catholic culture by providing a coffee house environment with Catholic décor, entertainers, speakers, and music for individuals to reflect, pray, enjoy, and grow spiritually in the fellowship of other Catholic Christians. We commit to creating and maintaining a Catholic atmosphere that helps individuals to grow in the Catholic faith as witnessed by the Christian attitudes in their professional, academic, and personal lives. Our Purpose TSC will offer a common forum that encourages and promotes Catholic culture for like-minded people to come together to share and grow in their faith. All activities held on the weekends will hold solid Catholic teachings and/or encourage those in attendance to live out their Catholic faith. TSC would like to work together with Religious Orders and Diocesan priests to promote Vocations and spiritually feed the people they encounter. The café will draw young people together for network opportunities and to strengthen the Catholic community in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Servant of God, John Paul the Great taught us to not be afraid and to evangelize in a radical way using other mediums to reach out to young people. This coffee house is a response to his message. Our Vision: •To have a free-standing coffee house located in walking distance to a Catholic church •Provide a coffee house open to the public for normal business hours Monday through Saturday •Promote and provide live Catholic entertainment (musicians, speakers, artists, comedians, shows, movies, etc.) on Friday and Saturday evenings •Create an environment where people can come for meetings or study •A place for social interactions, networking, and fellowship amongst Catholics •Offer variety of products (apparel, jewelry, books, cds, etc.) geared towards young people to promote Catholic culture at the gift shop •Promote Vocations by working with different Religious orders and Diocesan priest •Provide information, counseling, answer questions, or receive spiritual direction on a given time and day to individuals from organizations such as: ◦Various Religious orders and Diocesan priests ◦Pro-life organizations ◦Pro-bono counseling services ◦Any other Catholic organizations willing to serve young people Future goal: The Shepherd’s Cafe will be a non-profit organization. TSC will work with Catholic Mission sites to purchase coffee from impoverished coffee farmers to ensure they get just wage and properly support them financially. TSC will educate and make an awareness of poverty around the world by sharing the stories of these farmers and the Missionaries who serve them. TSC will publicize the need to support Catholic Missions. All proceeds (minus expenses) will be given back to these Mission sites to help them continue their services in their communities. Everyone who purchases coffee at TSC will partake in this great cause as one Body of Christ.
